Our guide to things to do in Sheffield for Christmas 2026: the city centre Christmas market, the Lyceum panto, Kelham Island's Victorian market, the Cathedral's tree festival and winter walks.

Things to do in Sheffield for Christmas with Hilltop

Sheffield does Christmas well. From late autumn the city centre fills with wooden cabins and lights, the Lyceum gets ready for panto season, and the museums and the Cathedral put on some of their best-loved events of the year. It’s a mix of long-standing traditions and things you’ll only find here.

If you’re looking for things to do in Sheffield for Christmas in 2026, here’s our guide to the highlights, for locals and for anyone staying in our serviced apartments in the city.

A quick note before you plan: some organisers haven’t published their 2026 dates yet. Where that’s the case we’ve described what usually happens, so check the organiser’s website before you set off.

1. Christmas Market in Sheffield

The Sheffield Christmas Market is one of the best-known things to do in Sheffield at Christmas. In 2025 it brought more than 50 cabins to Fargate, Pinstone Street and The Moor, with most of the traders based locally, and it ran from mid-November into the first days of January. Expect Yorkshire pudding wraps, German sausages, churros, toasted marshmallows, hot chocolate and mulled wine, plus Alpine-style bars for warming up between stalls.

It’s also a good place to find gifts made by local makers. The council hadn’t announced the 2026 dates when we updated this guide, so keep an eye on its website in the autumn.

2. Panto at the Lyceum: Cinderella

Sheffield Theatres has confirmed this year’s Lyceum pantomime: Cinderella, running from Saturday 28 November 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027. Damian Williams returns as the Dame, and the show is written and directed by Paul Hendy, whose team was behind the Lyceum’s award-winning Snow White.

Tickets have been on sale since December 2025 and some performances have already sold out, so book early if panto is on your list. The Lyceum is in the city centre, a short walk from our serviced apartments in Sheffield, which makes it an easy night out for guests.

3. Victorian Christmas Market at Kelham Island Museum

Visit Kelham Island Museum’s Victorian Christmas Market to step back in time. It’s usually held over the first weekend of December and is one of the best Christmas activities in Sheffield. The market celebrates the city’s industrial past, with more than 80 stalls selling Sheffield-made goods, gifts and seasonal food, from hog roast to wood-fired pizza.

There’s music from local brass bands, choirs and carollers, stallholders in Victorian dress, and plenty for children, including Santa’s Grotto and rides on the miniature Kelham Flyer. Sheffield Museums hadn’t announced the 2026 dates at the time of writing, so check their website before you go.

4. The Magical Winterland at Meadowhall

For a family day out, the Magical Winterland at Meadowhall has become a winter fixture in recent years. It’s a free-to-enter Christmas village with fairground rides, seasonal food and drink, a bar and Santa’s Grotto, with the rides and grotto paid for separately. In 2025 it ran from late November into early January.

Details for 2026 haven’t been confirmed yet, but if it returns it’s a fun option for groups and families staying with us over the festive season.

5. Sheffield Cathedral’s Christmas Tree Festival

One of the most beautiful things to do in Sheffield for Christmas is the Christmas Tree Festival at Sheffield Cathedral. Last winter the Cathedral was filled with more than 40 trees, each decorated by a local charity or community group, and entry was free. It’s a lovely celebration of community spirit and a peaceful break from the shopping crowds.

The Cathedral also hosts carol services, concerts and, in recent years, light projections across its walls. Its 2026 Christmas programme hasn’t been published yet, so check the Cathedral’s website nearer the time.

6. Explore Sheffield’s Green Spaces

If you’d like to get outdoors over the festive season, Sheffield’s green spaces are a great alternative. It’s one of the greenest cities in the UK, with parks, woodland and open countryside close by. Endcliffe Park and Ecclesall Woods are ideal for a frosty morning walk, and the Peak District is right on the doorstep.

Our serviced apartments in Sheffield have good transport links to the city’s Botanical Gardens, and the Peak District is around 20 minutes away. A winter walk and a pub lunch is hard to beat after a busy week.

Local Dining and Nightlife

A Christmas trip to Sheffield isn’t complete without trying its restaurants, cafes and bars. Many restaurants put on festive menus, cafes serve hot chocolate and mulled wine, and bars across the city run themed nights and live music through December.

Guests staying with us can also cook in a fully equipped kitchen in the apartment, which is handy between festive meals out. Eating out at local independents is still one of the best ways to get to know the city, and it helps Sheffield’s small businesses through the winter.
